I saw a note a couple of days ago that the State Department is still screening immigrants by requiring them to state whether they have ever been members of any Nazi or Quisling party organizations or have had any communist affiliations.

It seems like the Dept. by this time could have issued a directive to its employees to cross out Nazi and write some synonym for "radical Islam."

As a cub engineer I was field engineer on a CoE project. I heard a flooring contractor mumbling to himself and asked what was the matter. He shook his head and said: "This is the way underlayment was done in my fathers time. It is not how it we do today!"
Later the door hardware installer told me that Government Spec's for hardware was about 30-40 years behind the times, so that the manufacturers had to run special runs for Government projects and would charge twice the price charged for current civilian products of the same functionality and better quality.
Kind of like the 8"x10½" paper specified in order to save on paper as I was told, but also heard that the paper manufacturers would take standard 8½x 11 paper and run it back through the cutters to trim 1/2 inch off the top and one side, and then of course, charge extra for that process. .

Some kind of technical expert and I were talking about self-driving cars. We agreed that it was insane to think that people could be backups for self-driving cars because it would be impossible to maintain driving level vigilance without actually driving. He thought it should be the other way around: the car should be the backup for the human. For example, it might brake if you accidentally followed too closely or didn't realize that the car in front of you had stopped. Or at specially equipped crosswalks, it could detect people in the crosswalk and brake to prevent you from accidentally running them over. I think this sounds like a better approach than the other way around. Obviously you'd need an override for glitches.
