"The Most Embarrassing '90s Beauty Trends."

I'm only linking to this so I can say that the trick is to notice what you are doing now that's embarrassing. Everyone can laugh at what was done 10, 20, or 30 years ago. But you should know that someone in the future is laughing at you and ask why.

So what looked good to people in the past still looks good in the past and whatever we think of it now is only true now, where we are, in the present?

Ellington spoke only in the present tense there, so the answer to my question isn't clear, though maybe it was clear when he said it.

How the hell does anyone suffer through a web site like that. The Ads come in at megabits, and the supposed info comes through in bits per second.

I don't get it...

Even if there was free money on the 10th page, I can't suffer though the first half-page.

I usually just exclaim [expletive deleted]!

No way I'm going to click through 46 slow-loading pages complete with pop-ups.

That's what I hate about the future: those people are SOOOO condescending and superior.

46 reasons to laugh at the silliness of women? Is that what we're doing this morning?

What about combovers?

Oh, men do that.

Anyway, it's timeless.

I'd still fuck most of them, despite the occasional unfortunate hair.

What can I say?

I'm still a 'tendrils' guy.

"what you are doing now that's embarrassing"

Well, I did read a blog post about fashion by a law professor I don't know personally who appears to instruct me to think more deeply about what might be embarrassing to my future self.

Sure, that could prove mildly embarrassing at some point. Then again, I resisted the invitation to click, and got off a snarky comment before lunch, so I predict my future self's self-respect will remain intact.

The future will wonder why women did the whole Amy-Winehouse-cat's-eye thing with the eye liner.

Future me is already looking at old pictures and wondering why jumpsuits and rompers seemed like a good idea to 2015 me.

I will, however, defend the judicious use of tendrils until the day I die.

backwards baseball caps, low-rider pants, mullets. If you couldn't tell these were laughable when they first started you just weren't, mentally, an adult.

Charlize Theron has eyebrows? Who knew?

Eleanor said...

Most of those things were temporary at least. I wonder what women will do when their tats go out of style.

William said...

I didn't know there was such a thing as tendrils until just now. I'm pro tendril. It's a way of occupying more space in a gentle and seductive way.

William said...

I'm agnostic when it comes to eyebrows. Apparently there was a skinny eyebrow fad, and I never noticed it. I noticed tendrils but in a subliminal way.

Belly button bling and bare midriffs are hot, but I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be looking at the girls who are most capable of looking good in such styles.

DANIEL Oh, I've enjoyed reading about you in the society pages. Are you, uh, really 56?
SARA Parts of me are.
DANIEL Ah.
SARA Would you like a cocktail?
DANIEL Oh, yes, please.

Huh. Somehow I avoided all of these back then. And I'm fairly sure I'm avoiding all the ones people will ridicule in the future, including the ones men are currently participating in.

You know what they call it when you're not susceptible to every passing fad and silly style, but are confident in what is proven? Conservatism.

I like tendrils.

Heh. I keep seeing these and thinking that the going to the bathroom process must be a real pain.

I clicked through as many as I could take and every one was about thin eyebrows. How is that bit of nothing an embarrassing fashion trend?
