"Wow. Did you give any actual thought to your choice of the headline and photo for this article? "

"The photo is of Sen. Sanders, with his arms around two young boys. The headline reads, 'The Bernie Sanders Archive is Bustling with Mysterious Young Men.' You do realize the unfounded, and terrible, implication of this combination, don't you? The photo doesn't even have anything to do with the content of the article which is about interns digitizing boxes and boxes of content from Sanders' time as mayor. Did the editor and writer get lazy coming up with the headline and photo for this article or this is a hatchet job? Either way, it sure isn't good journalism. Shame on The New Republic!"

Interesting that they went there immediately. I wouldn't have. That thought might never have come into my brain without being suggested. My first thought was that it's shameful to indoctrinate young people with the deadly mind poison of socialism.

So Hillary has paid/unpaid interns out on liberal news sites trolling Bernie Sanders posts. That is a complete and total surprise.

I'm going with lazy; odds that the headline writer saw the picture are pretty low. The editor SHOULD have saw that and realized that there might be an accidental double meaning, but deadlines cause people to miss stuff. I remember having to explain the difference between "high, performing" and "high-performing" to someone who was fuming that we had a deadline and couldn't change every little thing.

From Donald Douglas's link: "“Can you imagine 20 years ago anyone thinking you could sit down in front of your computer and talk to tens of thousands of people in America at once and do it at such a reasonable cost?” Sanders said."

Never would have happened in Bernie's America.

Before the Internet, the universities were hooked-up with dial-up UUCP (unix to unix copy). This was a very popular email system. It also transported news groups.

I think the revolution was with the advent of the Web browser. Before this, it was a cruel split-screen typewriter interface.

Wow, and Romney was pilloried for "Binders full of women".

Now, Sander is being Hillaried with "Archive Bustling with Mysterious Young Men".

I immediately thought of the ridicule that Bush 1 endured for supposedly expressing wonderment about a bar code reader.

What's worse: being caught in bed with a binder full of women or an archive bustling with young men?

To be fair, in 1995 installing Linux meant downloading 30-40 3.5 inch disks of data and that took hours, even over a 14,400 baud modem, downloading still pictures brought your PC to a standstill, and you actually had to work on getting a computer virus.

On the other hand, even back then AOL hosted events with politicians and celebrities.

And people like me looked down on people who used AOL.

Interestingly enough, when I posted the link to this (TNR) article on Facebook, the preview came up with a different headline ("Who's Copying Every Page of Bernie Sanders's Archive?"). But if you follow the link, the article itself comes up with the original "Mysterious Young Men" title (and the photo above).

Thorley Winston said...

I voted for “click bait.” If this was done for any other reason (no one seriously thinks Sanders is going to beat Clinton for the nomination) it would probably be to insulate Mrs. Clinton from some of the ridiculous rumors some have tried to start about her and her assistant. By having another Democratic (or Democratic-leaning) candidate smeared with innuendos of having a gay relationship in the primary, the media will come down twice as hard should it happen to Mrs. Clinton in the general election and they will spin this as part of the “vast right-wing conspiracy.”

Aol actually was founded in 1985. It really was beginning to fade in coolenss usage by 1996. However, I remember trying to work ircle (chat) and or early Hotline (pre-Limewire) and it was a nightmare.

I like Bernie, but as a person in his 70s, he probably doesn't realize that 20 years ago was 1996 until he thinks about it. I know my mom doesn't.

There is a problem with picture, but not with the article or the headline.

Well, except for the fact that the article almost seems to imply that the only people looking through the Sanders archive in the basement of Bailey/Howe library at the University of Vermont are working for Sanders..

Sander's campaign is apparently copying and digitizing the files. I don't know why Sanders would want to keep this a big secret, except maybe that this is an a "independent expenditure" he can't be connected to. Except that that does not seem to be the case, and they are indeed staffers. So what then? Not letting on it wasn't done till now? Not letting on Sanders might be worried about soemthing? Not trying to increase interest in the archive? Fear that if more attention is called to it something might be taken out or added?

The word "mysterious" carries the implication of spying or private detectives-or security guards.

Sammy Finkelman said...

Jerry Brown had a BBS in 1992.

Now Sanders may be talking about a microphone connected to your PC, which would have been pretty rare in 1995.

Built in modems and internet connectivity were just getting started then.

For 15 years before, communicability was an add-on. Apple actually wanted to include it early, but they hired John Draper (Captain Crunch) to write the software and he kept putting "blue box" capability into it.

So for 15 years or so, from 1979 to about 1994, only experienced users were connected to anything at their home computers.

Sammy Finkelman said...

I think "blue boxes" nowadays wouldn't work, and are irrelevant, with most telephone calling plans having no extra charge long distance dialing.

Should read "Welcome to the I Opposed a Clinton" club. Classical liberal, rock-ribbed Republican, commie stooge... makes no difference. The Clintons, especially Hillary, aren't about politics. Never were. Bill was the least political President since Washington. He identified as a Democrat because under the skin he's a white trash Ozark hillbilly, yellow dogs all who can't disassociate the Republican Party from Abe Lincoln and the Wahr of Noarhthun Aggresshun Among men of his age and class voting Republican was like asking a Pole to vote for a Hapsburg. Bill was always in it for the shine... being the center of attention always, having lickspittle flunkeys at his beck and call, and the cooze. That was the big attraction, the cooze. For Hillary its power. Bernie has appeared on Hill's radar as a threat to her grab for power. Therefore he must be destroyed.

Beware, Bernie. The Vince Foster option remain open.

The photo looks innocent to me. I just slightly concerned about where that right hand is.

About 1994-95 I had a Toshiba laptop dual booting to Windows 3.1 and Coherent (a Unix compatible OS by Mark Williams Co. with UUCP, emacs, awk, sed, nroff, a C compiler, etc.). I don't still have the set, but I'm thinking there were no more than 3 or 4 3.5 in. discs.

The Godfather, Part I:

« In his later years, he was a big contributor to charities,
particularly for young people. »
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

- Associated Press obituary of resident Hot Springs, Arkansas "retired"
gangster Owen Vincent (Owney the Killer) Madden's in the Saturday,
April 24, 1965 New York Times.

I should note that Owney Madden's obituary in the New York Times on Saturday April 24, 1965 claims that he had retired, which was false. This entire obituary is therefore misleading. But in spite of the public relations here, there is *nevertheless* one significant sentence in that obituary:

« In his later years, he was a big contributor to charities,
particularly for young people. »

Now, in 1965, that probably looked fine. It made Owney Madden look good.

But now read this:

« Clinton's career began while he was still a student at Hot Springs
High School, where he was president of his junior class, the Beta Club
(for academic achievers) and the Kiwanis Key Club. By his late teens,
Clinton was already a semi-professional politician, so greatly in demand
as a civics club speaker and leader of charitable fund drives that his
high-school principal had to limit his engagements in order to protect
his schooling. »

- Article by Michael Kelly in the New York Times Magazine of July 31, 1994, page 25.

Bill Clinton was a « leader of charitable fund drives »

Putting two and two together, what does this mean? It means that Bill
Clinton was raising money from Vincent Owen (Owney the Killer) Madden.

When Owen Vincent (Owney the Killer) Madden, died in April, 1965. . .

« Owen Vincent Madden, Prohibition whiskey baron, nightspot owner,
killer, and gray eminence in our community for many years, was laid to
rest in a handsome casket, as his obituary noted, amid a profusion of
flowers. The local politician who spoke the eulogy recalled that "this
community's prosperity and welfare were uppermost in the heart of this
man, who for thirty years gave his all to Hot Springs. We know not and
care not what they said about him in New York, Chicago, or Washington."
Mourners in snappy clothes appeared from all over the nation, and his
pallbearers, as was only fitting, included such respected local citizens
as the chief of police. »

- The Bookmaker's Daughter by Shirley Abbott (Ticknor and Fields, 1991)
page 273.

He was a kind of like Lex Luther character - considered a good guy in the town where he took up residence.

During approximately the 1955-65 period things were such in Hot Springs,
Arkansas so that the city was nicknamed Little Vegas - but it was all kept
out of the national press, even though slot machines were on many street
corners.

It was in this mileau that Clinton got his start in politics - a job in
a 1966 Gubernatorial primary campaign, and a patronage job in Washington
with Senator Fulbright.

And even before, maybe.
