Hell, I might actually be willing to stand out in the cold collecting signatures for them, just to watch them go down in flames, AGAIN!

I'm sure the hard working people who pay union dues they can barely afford are thrilled to see the money going to wastes like this.

"Johnny One-Note" doesn't even begin to describe these guys, does it?

While it's hard not to respect the unions for guys who work in coal mines or steel mills, it's harder to work up sympathy for the folks down at the DMV. I think the public sector union folks see themselves as having the hard trades mystique, but that's an image not shared by the public at large.

Sure, you know what's best for them. I bet if the unions stopped spending their dues money on causes they didn't agree with, your POV would have more sympathy. But that would ruin the whole concept of workforces being money farms for the Democrats, right?

Isn't the fact that the unions get to negotiate for all the workers something demanded by the unions? I bet the vast majority of right-to-work people would quite happily relieve the unions of that burden.

Brando said...

There seems to be some confusion, so let's explain this now--"right to work" legislation simply means that businesses cannot agree to labor agreements that prohibit the hiring of nonunion labor. In other words, they cannot discriminate against an employee because of that employee's lack of association in an organization.

How on earth can anyone who calls themselves "liberal" object to that? If you object to just about every other type of workplace discrimination, why is this one okay? Simply because unions are always good and beneficial for employees, even if the employee decides s/he doesn't think so? How paternalistic do you have to be to assert that the union is what's best for the employee so the employee should be forced to join if they want the job?

Please explain that without sounding like a corporatist.

garage mahal said...

But the extreme butt-hurt of garage and other lefties

I'm not union. Never have been. I am laughing at the idiot unions that supported Walker after their private union withers away. You know who is not touched by this new union law? Walker's palace guards, police unions. LOL.

dreams said...

"Beauty is workers who don't join the union get the same benefits. Freeloaders."

That assumes that the union was responsible for the benefits and that might not be so. Competition for workers is another consideration.

As to public sectors workers, aren't they largely a bunch of freeloaders? Freeloading on the taxpayer's money.

I'm not the one who complains each time Althouse posts pictures of protesters with signs equating Walker with Hitler.

Beauty is workers who don't join the union get the same benefits.

Incorrect. The union members would have the union to negotiate on their behalf. But each non-union member would have to negotiate their own benefits with their employer.

I once worked for a company that didn't give you any benefits that you didn't negotiate for during the hiring or review process. Those that asked for vacation time, got vacation time. Same for health insurance and raises. They ended up with a few pissed-off employees, but there is no law forcing employers to offer the same benefits or raises to all of their employees.

Those that want to outsource those negotiations to someone else would be free to join the union. Those that would rather negotiate for themselves could do so by not joining the union.

Right to work for what each individual considers to be fair and reasonable. As for the public workers, fair and reasonable is correlated with the average compensation in the private sector.

The taxpayers do not serve public employees. Public employees do work for the taxpayers.

I Callahan said...

Big government is actually unforcing (if that's a word) big business from being forced to accept unions in the first place.

I've heard the "non-union members freeloading" argument a hundred times, and it's still nonsense. Non-union employees are there at the disposal of the employer; they agreed to the wages the employer offered.

So no one is freeloading.

Not becoming right to work is the government forcing business to make decisions for their workers.

Right to work makes it the workers' decision.

Beauty is workers who don't join the union get the same benefits.

Hardly. Hell, my employer gives me a better deal than our union employees.

tim in vermont said...

When I was working in Australia a couple of decades ago, I remember reading that the dockworkers had something like a 2.5% tax on the economy. One can't break their strike because no other port in the world will then accept your exports. This is called "fairness."

traditionalguy said...

Trade unions are like lawyers. They are expensive and hopefully are never needed. But when an employer is abusive because he enjoys abusing people, then a labor union needs to be hired.

tim in vermont said...

"But when an employer is abusive because he enjoys abusing people."

Well, government is full of people like that. A private company like that is likely to go out of business. But if you get all of your insights into human nature from stories, stories which often require villains to be compelling, I guess you would have the sense that the world is full of people like that.

I am not against unions. I just think govt unions create an entity that works to destroy democracy. For instance, the the UK, the single-payer system is the largest employer in the country, and you can bet when they show up to bargain, it isn't the patient's interest that is foremost, any more than the teachers represent the students. The govt represents the patients, and when the power relationship gets reversed, well, you can see what happens if you follow the news from the UK.

Right to work means people can't be forced to join a union as a condition of employment. It doesn't mean they can't join a union if they choose. It also means they can quit their union membership if they don't like it. If the unions are so great, why did so many Wisconsin public employees stop paying their dues when given the opportunity?

Perhaps the unions need to do a better job for their members (and not just their leadership) if they want to survive. It's a radical idea, I know, but it just might work.

Alexander said...

Nothing says "kicking the working class in the nuts" like a policy of importing as many unskilled laborers as you can get your hands on; nothing says "shoveling all the money to a few at the top" than having government policy - from healthcare to unions - that mandates taxpayers make use of (and pay for) - the services of government approved individuals.

But again, what do I know - I supported the same guys as Matthew Sablan.
