"El Capitan’s Dawn Wall Climbers Reach Top at Yosemite."

Yay!!
When the men reached the top, they were greeted by a crowd of 70 and enjoyed Champagne and fried chicken.

Of course, now you have to climb back down.

Well doesn't that put paid to posing, posturing, puerile, professional football players and their ilk. Real men with their asses hanging out there and no one to carry them off the "field" with a pulled hamstring. Big congratulations.

What? No women made it up there? None on the team?

How sexist!

I think that describes the celebration after the first climb of the Dawn Wall in 1970. ("The Dawn Wall, sometimes called the Wall of the Early Morning Light, was first climbed in 1970 by Warren Harding and Dean Caldwell (no relation to Tommy).")

Yes, Yay!!!

That was my first thought as well.

Re Football showboating (comment above).

It has completely gotten out of hand relative to actual accomplishment.

I really do wonder what cost benefit goes through the mind of coaches, owners, and alumni when for example they watch a player risk an unimpeded touchdown by crossing the goaline ball outstreched one handed.

Fucking awesome.

Well why didn't they just come the same way as the champagne and fried chicken? Could have saved a heap of trouble.

Sooooo....there WAS an easier way up the hill.

Some kid, born a few years ago and who will find herself in politics in about 40 years, was named after one of these guys.

CWJ said...

Patrick,

No doubt! But her name will be Tomy or Kevn.

I don't see the value in it. It is pure endurance and you have ropes and harnesses.

I am more impressed by the Muslim worker who saved all those employees at the French kosher deli by hiding them in a freezer.

It's enough that I see it every time I start my computer.

Tough job done in a workmanlike manner. It's a man thing.

Tommy Caldwell once challenged me to a pull up contest. I sat down my beer, licked the barbecue off my fingers, and beat him, fair and square. Honest injun.

Larry Day is talkin shit late at night! Can you beat Meade in a pull-up contest?

I understand there's a stairway on the back side.
Although you could probably walk down just using the hundreds of petons and chocks left in -place over the years

The accomplishment of these great men was celebrated by Obama with a picture of...wait for it...a picture of Obama

Captain James T. Kirk would have completed this if Spock hadn't interrupted him.

Rusty - There is no stairway off the back side, in fact there is no back side, It's a canyon wall. Perhaps you confuse it with Half Dome, which does have a ladder-like contraption on the back side. jacksonjay - While it was indeed late at night, I was not talking shit. I really did beat Tommy Caldwell in a pull up contest. There is one detail that reduces the magnitude of that accomplishment somewhat, but why should I bring that up? :)

Congratulations, Tommy and Kevin. People have no idea of how hard you've worked and what an amazing accomplishment your ascent really is.
