12-year-old boy, injured in the bombing, waking up between surgeries, asks "Did mom finish?" the marathon.

We love this boy, Aaron Hern:

Yes, nice, and brave, kid. Tragic situation.

But living up to my handle, I just have to say:

Running a marathon is stupid. It's just plain stupid. Bag of hammers stupid.

The original Greek marathon runner, if the story is even true, only did so because he absolutely positively had no other choice open to him.

We now know the internal damage done to all parts of the legs, by running. Feels good when you are young, brutal consequences (that we all pay for in insurance premiums) later.

So why do people do it? Vanity? Bragging rights?

It certainly seems selfish. You don't run for someone else, do you?

I love how Col. West talks about all the planning and preparation that it takes to train for a marathon. He also reminds us of all the planning, preparation, and intense coordination it takes to make the big Marathon run smoothly for the thousands of participants.

The terrorists - and yes they are terrorists - ( no matter who - or what color ethnicity religion ideology is behind this horror) plan as well. They plan to destroy.

We love this little guy, indeed.

When I was in the Army, I did a lot of running. That was back in the days when we ran for miles wearing combat boots. I'm convinced that running causes brain damage. I refuse to run unless something dangerous is chasing me. It simply wouldn't be prudent.

Hey Someonehastosayit:

Fuck you.

I ran Boston, and had just finished changing in the middle of Boyleston Street when I heard the first bomb, turned, saw the smoke and then the second bomb from 2 blocks away. I was pretty sure right then I had just heard the sounds of people being ripped apart.

And your reaction is "It's stupid to run marathons." That's your reaction? Seriously?

What kind of subhuman shit are you? What happened to your soul?

tiger said...

So now are people who run Marathon 'heros'?

I need to know because the word is used so frequently that I can't keep up.

And this: the people who helped with the injured were not 'heros' - they were people helping - big difference.

The guy that tackled the 'person of interest' is closer to being one than the 'medics' because he had no idea what might happen to him.

Running is an addiction. Yes- it's horrible on the knees. I know ex-runners who don't run because of bad knees, but they still long to do it.

I prefer hiking. A hike that provides a nice payoff like a grand view is the best.

Ficta said...

Yes, running is an addiction that makes you thinner, fitter, happier, better able to handle stress. If you train carefully and are lucky, your knees will hold out, if you're unlucky, I feel for you.

If you think "man wasn't meant to run", google "persistence hunting". It's the one physical thing we can do better than our food.

Knee Surgery vs Heart Disease/Type 2 Diabetes/general system deterioration due to obesity/etc: I'd want to see some detailed numbers before I'd believe running injuries are a major factor in insurance premiums compared to the alternative.

Someone – I was running my first marathon, obviously struggling at about mile 15. An older guy, maybe 60-65, passed me. We nodded and exchanged greetings (these are actually very social events) and he went on. A few yards later, he turned around and slowed down to let me catch up with him. He ended up running the rest of the race with me, coaching me, giving me tips…then 100 yards from the finish, he encourage me to sprint, as he held back. He didn’t have to and I didn’t ask, but he put aside his goals for the day to help a first-timer.

Granted there’s a lot of lonely training miles and family time put aside in preparation of a race – it can be a self-serving venture – I get that, but then again, small things like this happen. You just hope you can return the favor.

Ann Althouse said...

Apparently, the evidence these days is showing that the health benefits of walking are as good as for running, so don't compare running to sitting around. Compare it to walking.

Note that with walking you can transport yourself to places where you might otherwise drive and you can do errands and carry things. Walking should set the standard by which all other physical activity is measured.

That said, is the aftermath of a bombing that blew off many legs really the time to talk about how runners are destroying their legs?

Most marathon runners I know are aware that marathon running is not the most healthy form of exercise, and that they will likely only be able to do it for a limited time. They do it because they enjoy it. I don't see the problem.

SomeoneHasToSayIt said...

Hey Harsh Pencil -

Why did you run Boston? So you could brag that you did? So that you could feel an endorphin rush?

One of the dead is dead because he was there to greet daddy as he (daddy) also earned bragging rights.

That's my point.

Running a marathon is all about you.

Patrick said...

This should never happen. Ever. To anybody.

Agreed. The world can be a shitty place.

Why do people go to conventions? That's what a race like Boston is, a serious runners' convention.

First Pencil was being a douche and now you are. One child is dead because of some numbnut. That numbnut could have attacked any activity: a playground, an arena, a school assembly, a subway, a mall. Anything.

And it could have been your kid had that numbnut's choice been different. If it were you wouldn't have caused your kids death any more than this father did.

I'd like to mention that people do run marathons for other people. Like the parents who push their disabled kids and raise money to fight whatever disease has affected their child. Or people who run to raise money for this or that cancer, or heart disease, or people who just run in memory of someone else. There's that guy who worked his ass off to lose a shit ton of weight and run Boston as a gesture to his little niece with cystic fibrosis.

And Brad Marchand, winger for the Boston Bruins, is raffling off his suite at the TD Garden, money going to the Richards family.

The Bruins, the NHL and the NHLPA have teamed up to donate $250K to effected families. The Kraft family has pledged to match the first $100K in donations to one of the other groups.

I have no idea what the Red Sux are doing.

By the way, those injured spectators weren't watching people run a marathon, they were there watching people finish a marathon.

You could hold a marathon in a stadium with a 400 meter track, and then spectators could watch people run a marathon (105.5 laps). Yawn.

And taking your kid to watch a ballgame is NOTHING like having your kid at the finish line of a marathon you are running. The former is about a game you are BOTH watching, and the latter is your kid watching/witnessing your 'achievement'.

One is a social event both are experiencing, the other is something else.

Not the same at all.

They're not the same in terms of your enjoyment. But the nature of enjoyment or lack thereof makes no difference to who is responsible for the kid's death. If a kid is killed by a terrorist going to a family reunion he dreads are the parents responsible?

Be serious, the fact that you think running a marathon is stupid or unhealthy doesn't have any impact on the father's responsibility.

when I first heard a pressure pot was involved I felt an instant sympathy for pressure pots because they're existing with a bad rep to begin with. People are afraid of them, they can be dangerous, but advances have been made since mother's pressure pot, and now they have two safety valves. In fact, you can replace those valves easily yourself. Just a lid with two holes and standard valves. And a pressure lock.

Such a bummer for pressure pots. I use mine all the time. Very helpful at altitude and essential in the mountains. Really, essential up there. Water boils at 185, or 190 depending on where you are, things take

The technology reaches out... making it possible for us to be here, for example, among other things... but the price is the alienation of our immediate surroundings.

=====================
Not true. Terror is simply a tool of war, and all war is is "diplomacy by a different means." Same with revolution and insurgency, where it is defined as "politics by a different means"

Our side has our war heroes and our spin on "One man's terrorist is our sides Freedom Lover!"

Our list of terrorist heroes is long. From folks like Spartacus of antiquity to the Blessed Founders burning Loyalist homes and printing presses and use of dungeons without trial. Our admiration of Gen Sherman, Gerinomo, the terrorists that helped found Israel, all the people that ordered, helped or actually dropped Napalm cluster bombs on German and Japanese kids and women to kill and terrorize. Our supposed love of The Great Nelson Mandela. Reagans honestly beloving the Holy Mujahadeen Freedom Lovers - the proto Al Qaeda, taliban and Paki ISI folks - as long as they were terrorizing America's enemy.

And the Left and the Islamoids have their own set of terrorists they consider Heroes. People out risking their lives for their sacred causes through violent means...

Why run a marathon?

Been a mediocre-at-best runner all my life. As I approached 50 I decided to set a goal: run a marathon. I learned a lot about myself in that 17 week training program. Didn't make my goal of 4 hours so two years later ran it again (PF Chang's Rock & Roll) and finished in 3:56.

Last year when my daughter said she wanted to run a marathon, I gladly volunteered to train with her. Great bonding time. And she beat her goal of under 4 hours. Unfortunately I finished but injured myself. Just now recovered but I wouldn't trade those experiences.

I probably won't run any marathons anymore but continue to run and run races, just nothing more than a half.

Video takes up a lot of space... that means money.

Who has access to an endless supply of money?

The mind wanders.

False choice. People do run, you know, 5K and thereabouts. Or walk. And it is just as good cardio as a marathon.

Ah. Carol has no sense of irony. She will be among the first that are devoured when the ZA happens.

We love this boy

And we do... and I cant think of a higher calling.

Oh, Lem, perhaps you should check yourself, every now again, as I know you do, and I can.

This one is for you.

Ceremony After A Fire Raid
I

Myselves
The grievers
Grieve
Among the street burned to tireless death
A child of a few hours
With its kneading mouth
Charred on the black breast of the grave
The mother dug, and its arms full of fires.

Begin
With singing
Sing
Darkness kindled back into beginning
When the caught tongue nodded blind,
A star was broken
Into the centuries of the child
Myselves grieve now, and miracles cannot atone.

Forgive
Us forgive
Us your death that myselves the believers
May hold it in a great flood
Till the blood shall spurt,
And the dust shall sing like a bird
As the grains blow, as your death grows, through our heart.

Crying
Your dying
Cry,
Child beyond cockcrow, by the fire-dwarfed
Street we chant the flying sea
In the body bereft.
Love is the last light spoken. Oh
Seed of sons in the loin of the black husk left.

II

I know not whether
Adam or Eve, the adorned holy bullock
Or the white ewe lamb
Or the chosen virgin
Laid in her snow
On the altar of London,
Was the first to die
In the cinder of the little skull,
O bride and bride groom
O Adam and Eve together
Lying in the lull
Under the sad breast of the head stone
White as the skeleton
Of the garden of Eden.

I know the legend
Of Adam and Eve is never for a second
Silent in my service
Over the dead infants
Over the one
Child who was priest and servants,
Word, singers, and tongue
In the cinder of the little skull,
Who was the serpent's
Night fall and the fruit like a sun,
Man and woman undone,
Beginning crumbled back to darkness
Bare as nurseries
Of the garden of wilderness.

III

Into the organpipes and steeples
Of the luminous cathedrals,
Into the weathercocks' molten mouths
Rippling in twelve-winded circles,
Into the dead clock burning the hour
Over the urn of sabbaths
Over the whirling ditch of daybreak
Over the sun's hovel and the slum of fire
And the golden pavements laid in requiems,
Into the bread in a wheatfield of flames,
Into the wine burning like brandy,
The masses of the sea
The masses of the sea under
The masses of the infant-bearing sea
Erupt, fountain, and enter to utter for ever
Glory glory glory
The sundering ultimate kingdom of genesis' thunder.

What a sweet sweet child Aaron. Healing is possible and probable. Attitude will matter. The topic of running. It is what it is with its risks and glories. Dancing for women especially is much better, yet not always easy to find a good dance studio nearby. Elliptical/Stepper is supposed to be lighter on the knees. And you do get to a point when walking is the only option, Magnesium is good for muscleaches and it's considered natural. As per orthopädie, well, maybe you stop running before it's too late. And save your knees. And yes, Happy Arteries in the End was probably worth it, no ? What would explain Clinton's Heart Surgery, though ? Hasn't he been a runner all his life ?

SomeoneHasToSayIt said, "We now know the internal damage done to all parts of the legs, by running. Feels good when you are young, brutal consequences (that we all pay for in insurance premiums) later."

I began having panic attacks about four years ago. I thought I was dying. After many trips to the er for a "heart attack", and after numerous tests we figured out what it was.

During the attacks I'd pace, or go for a really long walk. One day during one such attack it was to cold for a walk, so I jumped on the treadmill my husband had gotten me for Christmas and that had been collecting dust. That's when I discovered I could basically out run a panic attack. I became a devoted runner working up to eight miles, six days a week. I had to force myself to take a day off. Eventually the attacks disappeared altogether and I did it without therapy or medication. My knees seem fine although I've now taken up hiking with the dog.

Glad you're better, and I believe Forrest Gump used the same therapy in the movie.

No word yet on his knees.
