Remember when "women, the dominant sex, dropped their babies in birth buckets..."

"... during pit stops at the chariot races while passive, adoring males chewed on umbilical cords like beef jerky"?

I just recently learned that women were consigned to the top rows at Roman arenas. All those colliseum flicks had me believing they were in the front rows yelling for blood.

Bad link.

But since you asked, no, I don't recollect that at all.

Florence King is such a good writer that that the phony populist Molly Ivins plagiarized her repeatedly.

I'm with Big Mike. I don't remember that.

Women were the dominant sex in ancient Rome*?

Of course, and Christians were their version of Hare Krishnas.

* Hint: it was considered unmanly for a man to allow a woman to fellate him.

Cons wanting to go back in time before the 19th amendment, I do remember when the Republican party was somewhat rational!

LOL. Shiloh can't even admit that Naomi Wolfe and her vagina is a joke.

Rational?

Synova, again having lived thru 5+ years of Nixon and (8) years of Cheney/Bush my threshold for comedy is quite high!

I prefer the Tantra man. It sounds like shiloh but likes girls, at least part of them. A former partner of mine, in the days when he was single, used to say, "A woman is a life support system for a pussy." Apparently Wolf agrees.

chickelit said...

Regarding Naomi Wolf's alleged authority on dopamine and other "female hormones"--I doubt she knows the difference between a catechol and a catcall.

This topic is getting tiresome, Althouse.

The Lefties wouldn't be where they are without it, since women voted for slugs like Jack Kennedy and Willie only because they wanted to go to bed with them.

I kind of admire Naomi Wolf's courage. It really takes balls to subject yourself to such certain ridicule. The vagina is not my area of greatest expertise, but there really does seem to be a lot left to learn. Whoever heard of the g-spot until fairly recently? Can you imagine a major pleasure area of the human body that was not discovered until recent times?

No. I can think of a phony sex therapist naming it, though.

Florence King is one of my favorite humorists - a bisexual conservative, an atheist who favors organized religion, a tough-minded feminist who slices and dices whiny progressive womyn. Or, as she puts it:

"I don't suffer fools and I like to make fools suffer."

I love Florence King. Her book STET, Damnit!: The Misanthrope's Corner is a hoot.

She wrote 37 paperback porn novels in the 60s to pay her way through grad school, and she's a ruthless editor, so she was perfect for this review.

Crack, your Mormon obsession has apparently rendered your sarcasm detector useless.

From the review:

"If you thought there was nothing new to say about female sexuality, you don’t know Naomi Wolf’s gift for saying nothing new about anything. In her 1991 bestseller, The Beauty Myth, she revealed that attractive women are luckier than homely women. A human shoehorn, she used her subsequent fame to ease herself into the role of political consultant in the 2000 presidential race and reveal that Al Gore has the personality of a tree."

Magazines always go on shelves before their nominal publication date. If you had ever done any work so menial as being a periodicals clerk in a chain bookstore [raises hand here], you would know that. For that matter, you'd know it if you had ever read or -- better yet -- subscribed to any weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly periodical.

shiloh, Michelle pointed out something you were obviously ignorant of when you wrote your dumb snark ("Heh,heh, they got the wrong date on the magazine.") Of course, pointing out what you are ignorant of is an everyday occurence at Althouse.

Having once received my July Playboy at the end of May, MDT's "attempted" scholarly tediousness is somewhat amusing. Knowing she goes out of her way w/her way to be tiresome.

As stated previously re: this thread.

Hey, look, yet another opportunity to be tedious in a scholarly way! Shiloh, I promise you that my scholarly tediousness never, ever received a Playboy addressed to you. Had it done so, it would have alerted me, and I would have inquired here for your proper address and forwarded the zine on.

But the tediousness is delighted that you found it somewhat amusing, and will do its best to provide further amusement in future.

The history of anthropology & historical linguistics has many sad occasions where an ideology -- nationalism, racism, or in this case, feminism --- took precious little evidence & built a conjectural Taj Mahal out of it.

The claims of Neolithic "Earth Goddess" worship fall into just such a category.

You'd be amazed at how much feminism & (Crack's all-tyme favorite) New Age-isms look back on this Edenic fable (every bit the fable as the one in Genesis) as a proper societal end to work towards.

Hey, at the least the Christians & Jews know we can't go back to their Eden.

exiledonmainst,

Crack, your Mormon obsession has apparently rendered your sarcasm detector useless.

I don't know anyone would think I have a "Mormon obsession" when I've covered every religion, cult, belief system, etc., under the sun. Mormonism is just current because of Romney and how little the rest of you know about it, beyond meeting one or two and buying their bullshit.

If anything, it's you guys who are obsessed - with defending cults instead of letting them do it themselves.

Thinks it makes you a "good" person.

Please.

Makes you a bunch of idiots,...

And it occurs to me that many of you know as much about what I do as you do Mormonism. Just as you're wrong to think I'm focused on Mormonism, you're just as wrong about Mormonism. You don't understand either.

It's kinda fascinating,...

Yes, I flattered him and his rhetorical and graphic tics so much that, in response to having the idiocy of them shoved down his throat, he's actually trying straight (figuratively, anyway) commentary.

But he's still no Hatman.

And I wish it wasn't just you. It's funny how people are different:

Some, like me, get called idiots and try to "get smart." Narcissists get called idiots and "that does not trouble me in the slightest" - never realizing that's one of the very qualities that makes them idiotic.

Fine. You stay content with yourself, behaving like the fine folks in Rosemary's Baby - defending cultism and making a way for the phenomena to take hold of other's lives - and the life of our country. I'm going to stay like the stars of the latest slate of cult-themed films, and keep trying to FIND A WAY OUT of this nightmare you're so pleased with yourself about participating in.

No, exiledonmainst, you're not an idiot. You're the self-selected gatekeeper to the land of the idiots. Exiled On Main St.? That's a laugh:

Main St.'s being boarded up by the likes of you,...

Dante said...

Crack,

Your point about Mormon cultism, and the lack of attention by many is not lost, it's merely viewed as small potatoes compared to the big major culture war going on. On the one hand you have collectivist Obama and the other you have ideas of individual responsibility, and Romney is the standard bearer for that.

I haven't read all your comments, but I am unaware of any point you've made that shows some irreversible damage would be brought on America by Romney's election to the president.

Obama, I can think of a lot. I can think of a debt already at $51K per every person, and when adjusted for the 47%, it's more like $100K per person.

Frankly, I don't care about Romney's insincerity. Let me agree with you on this. The best thing Romney can do for his cult is to make America more healthy, and not in some flash in the pan way. If that garners the Mormon church some of the parasites, and converts them to cult members paying taxes, guess what? I'm FOR it.

If the cult gets too powerful, the Naomi Wolfs of the world will tear it down. They are doing a pretty good job destroying families, and the Christian faith. I'm sure they would relish a new inconsistent cult to go after (and before you talk about Jones and how the New Agers liked that guy, remember that Mormonism is pretty straight-laced, and is so incompatible with the leftists on so many fronts an alliance would never happen).
