"Your name is Brian Mitchell, and you're attracted to young girls, and you're just a loser."

"... you're not going down as a servant of God. You're going down as a child rapist. You're going down as the lowest of the low.... I hate to tell you this, Brian, but the Rapture has not happened. You are still in this room. You cannot escape.... She gave you up. She thinks that you are a child rapist. She finds you rather smelly, and disgusting."

The police interrogation of the man who kidnapped Elizabeth Smart. His response:
"She was converted by the spirit of God.... The Lord God delivered her.... I'm just obedient to what God told me to do... I have only done what the Lord God almighty commanded me to do... You're asking me to speak about things which are sacred and holy and which I cannot talk about.... I thought she was 18. And she willingly chose to be sealed... Get thee behind me Satan!"

Let's assume you have a rather recognizable coat, which I steal. Thereafter I start heaving bricks through store windows, keying cars, and taking a dump in the big planter box on the corner.

You might at first be blamed, because the coat is so recognizable.

Many people appropriate the coat of Jesus. Jesus, however, changes hearts. Ignore the man's language -- he was no follower of Christ.

Nor is our local embarrassment, Phred Phelpps.

This creep is another Mohammed complete with a raped child bride and believing in a god that tells him all he did is approved. Why is it that men who hear their own special revelations from angel gabrial are always sexual monsters? Maybe this particular bright and shining gabriel hates women.

I know, I know... The SCOTUS ruled that the death penalty for child rapists was unconstitutional (8th A), but what the hell...

Give him a trial then drag him out and slam him up against a wall and shoot him like the dog he is...

Reminds me of the story of the two bulls, from Colors.

Ask a repulsive narcissist flat-out if he raped a girl, and you'll never get a confession. But spread a little honey on the fishhook: "was your marriage consummated?" and he'll jump right on it.

Good old-fashioned Mutt and Jeff routine here.

"She's saying some terrible things about you. Here's your chance to set the record straight."

Fascinating stuff, from an interrogation point of view.

I'll say it again: Smart is a great, great warrior.

Um, can somebody spread the word on this one? It hasn't seemed to stick.

Bullshit. 9 out of 10 Christians just bought the same recognizable coat.

God, religion turns some people into such freaks. Or, more probably, they were freaks to begin with and religion is only a tool for them.

BTW - if what I've said bothers anyone, don't forget:

I'm just obedient to what God told me to do... I have only done what the Lord God almighty commanded me to do...

LOL

Mitchell is dressing this up in his religious conviction, but all he is really saying:

"The bitch was looking for it. You know she wanted it"

I certainly hope he's put in general population. Even criminals have some standards, and they don't seem to take kindly to child rapists.

I resent having to share the earth with people like this. Mental illness is one thing, pedophilia is quite another.

Amusingly, amidst all the God blather, he puts in "I thought she was 18." What a loser.

wv: culti. How appropriate.

Patrick said...

Mike, that was the first thing I noticed also: god told me to blah blah blah and I thought she was 18. What? Did God think she was 18 too? Throw away the key. My wv isn't as cool, though.

Like Mike and Patrick, the "I thought she was 18" phrase really stuck-out.

If this was a movie rather than a horrible tragedy, then in the context of the religeo-babble, it is comedy gold. It is also a huge tell: If you really believe God is telling you what to do AND that you must do it, would you really care if she is 18?

Okay God, totally on board with the whole "Do your will" theme, but the girl is only 17, so cast me into Hell if you must. I've got standards after all.

I guess one has to be put in that situation and I don't wish it on anyone but if that had been my daughter, I don't think there would be enough cops that could keep me from getting this guy.

I'm agnostic, and just in case there is no hell, we need some damned justice on earth. If there is a Hell, then we should still not leave our dirty laundry for God to clean up. Either way, we need to stop being pussies and get some fear of God or man into these people.

The only thing scary anymore is socialists and only to free-thinking people at that.

Insanity, bullshit. If this guy is psychotic, I'll eat my hat.

He's a narcissist with a severe personality disorder. He knew precisely that what he was doing was wrong. He just didn't care.

WV: Jigui. What I'm getting with it.

If this guy were smart, he would want the death penalty. Two things get you in trouble in prison; being a high profile criminal that other prisoners would get creed for attacking, and committing a crime against a young child. This guy hits them both. He will spend the rest of his life in protective custody, alone locked in a cell 23 hours a day. Imagine being locked up in a world full of violent dangerous people who want to kill and rape you and knowing that the only thing protecting you are prison guards who are borderline criminals and probably want to kill you themselves. I am not sure hell adequately describes what this guy is facing.

He is going to basically be thrown in a hole with vipers and forgotten about. Being put up against a wall and shot sounds a lot better to me.

Shorter Brian: I was horny. I didn't give a shit about how it would affect her, and I don't want punished for it.

I could respect that answer more.

This story is an example of what liars do to themselves and others. The monster believed his own lies, and gave himself permission to destroy another's chance at life for protecting his lie. I remember that an old lawyers aphorism is to never trust a man who meets you telling stories about himself obeying his religion...because he is always a liar. Many cults actually conduct training sessions on successful lying techniques, such as the Jehovah's Witnesses. The lying spirit IS the religious spirit. Two men who are known for fighting the Lying Religious spirit are Crack Emcee and Jesus of Nazareth.

"His lawyers are raising an insanity defense."

This is one thing I have never understood: if someone is proved to be dangerous to society, why does it matter if they do not have all their mental faculties? If someone's brain is functioning to tell them to physically harm people, they still do not belong out in society, and they still have committed horrible acts.

Yeah, the "I thought she was 18" was quite a tell.

Not crazy, just evil.

This.

I actually have close experience with a guy like this (22 years old, internet abducted a 13 year old girl) and he's baffling in his inability to see what he did. His mother is too by the way.

rcocean said...

I just want to say - I too am against child rape.

Gosh, I'm great.

Valerian said...

shirley elizabeth: Pleading insanity is just choosing a different poison, especially in violent or sexually assaultive cases. If this guy "wins," he doesn't get to go home. He will be committed to a secure mental institution for up to the maximum prison term for the offense. Offenders can be conditionally discharged under some circumstances, and then supervised in the community. But sex offenders often continue to be deemed "sexually violent," and they can be held indefinitely on that basis. Also, for all intents and purposes, the legal system treats a person who was found "not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect" as guilty. No guns, counts as prior conviction, etc.
