No doubt somebody has written the dispersion relation for annular flow, to find the fastest-growing disturbance wavelength.

That's the wavelength it then breaks up into, giving a pattern.

Same as herring-bone cloud formations, living off a wind shear ; the fastest-growing disturbance produces the size of the herringbone spacing, since it takes over first.

Cigarette smoke has a slight problem in that no physicists to speak of are watching it a lunch any longer.
