"To be sure, Trump got plenty of negative coverage in the press as well, but, during the campaign at least, the negative stories didn’t seem to stick to him with the same adhesion."

"And even now, as investigations of his administration’s connections to Russia splash across front pages, the Times has launched a new feature, a weekly call to readers to 'Say something nice' about him. I ask Clinton if she’s seen it. 'I did!' she says with a wide smile, taking a beat. 'I never saw them do that for me.'"

From "Hillary Clinton Is Furious. And Resigned. And Funny. And Worried./The surreal post-election life of the woman who would have been president," by Rebecca Traister.

AND: Here's the transcript of the graduation speech Hillary just gave at Wellesley:
You may have heard that things didn't exactly go the way I planned. But you know what? I'm doing okay. I've gotten to spend time with my family, especially my amazing grandchildren. I was going to give the entire commencement speech about them but was talked out of it.

Long walks in the woods. Organizing my closets, right? I won't lie. Chardonnay helped a little too. Here's what helped most of all. Remembering who I am, where I come from, and what I believe...
Too bad she didn't remember during the campaign. If she'd seemed at least a bit to be someone who believed in a few things, maybe the negative stories wouldn't have stuck to her with the same adhesion.

Well, the good news for Hillary is that she is still really, really rich, and the good news for us, is that she is still not President.

So, I'm pretty content.

This "out of the woods" thing is so contrived. You know she went on two, maybe three hikes total (easy to moderate, of course), and made sure she got her picture taken. Now it's a thing, a conversation item, it's part of her persona. If true, I sincerely hope a tick bites her.

Also, I laughed at the idea of the Times not being nice to her.

bleh said...

I don't wish Lyme disease on her, however. No one deserves that. Just a tick bite.

Off topic, but a judge just threw out the sentence of Lee Malvo, the DC sniper. Why? Because of the liberal Supreme Court which said you cannot punish a 17 year old as severely as an adult, even though Malvo was the triggerman and killed lots of people.

So thanks, leftists: Malvo might get to terrorize once more.

Impeachment?

How could she get that historical fact wrong? Nixon resigned. And she worked for one of the Congressional committees - until she was fired - at this time.

Hillary is not very smart at all. Even her speechwriters couldn't help her sound smart.

Bill Clinton actually was impeached. She should have been furious about that.

Personally I give her better odds of facing a criminal investigation than Trump getting impeached. Speaking of leaks, it would most interesting to know her wine and liquor store purchases.

Ann Althouse said...

Imagine what the Times would have said about her if it hadn't wanted to be nice to her.

She's upset (purports to be upset) that they gave her as much bad press as they did, but what if they'd wanted it to be bad? And what if, simultaneously, they'd wanted to help out Trump, the way they dearly wanted to help her out?

What a wacky alternative reality that would have been! Maybe it would have softened Trump and turned him into something we would not recognize as Trump, and he'd have lost.

"To be sure!" That's the funniest thing I've read this afternoon.
This Harvard study we were all talking about (on the ridiculously negative coverage Trump's received in his brief time in office so far) apparently hasn't made much of an impression on the smart Media set.
The Media gave Trump an amazing amount of coverage (which, in election terms, is fuel and/or oxygen) during the primaries and then threw almost everything they could against him during the general. The failure of that class to cope with Trump as President is largely due to the fact that the were CERTAIN he could not win, but did.
I'd ask "does Hillary have no same" but it's such an obvious answer...

What a load of manure! They'd have us believe that the evil right-wing "advocacy media" was the one of the causes of her defeat, despite the fact that almost every media outlet in the country was on her side and covered for her as much as possible during the election.

As for the whole misogyny angle, I wouldn't have a problem voting for a female candidate if she were, say, honest and ethical. Hillary Clinton is not even in the same zip code/area code/time zone as either of those character traits. I didn't vote against Hillary Clinton because she was a woman. I voted against her because she was a crooked, dishonest and corrupt, and I feared for the horrors she would inflict on our country.

From the article: "A competent woman losing a job to an incompetent man is not an anomalous Election Day surprise; it is Tuesday in America."

Is that what it was about? How competent was Hillary, really? She bungled healthcare reform under her husband, then rode his coattails into a career in national politics. She was gungho for going into Libya when you would think she might have learned something from what happened in Iraq. She refused her husband's advice to pay more attention to blue collar workers in the Rust Belt. These were not little mistakes and she had no major achievements on the other side of the ledger (unless you count sticking with Bill).

I can't help but wondering: suppose Bernie Sanders had beaten Carlie Fiorina. Does anyone think we would be hearing commentary like this: "To acknowledge the role sexism played in 2016 is not to make excuses for the very real failings of Clinton and her campaign; it is to try to paint a more complete picture. “I think a lot of people didn’t believe those of us who were yelling that it was hard to elect a woman president,” says Jess McIntosh, a Democratic strategist who was the director of communications outreach for the Clinton campaign. “The fact that that woman lost to the least qualified human being on the planet really kind of drove it home.”"

(quote from the article)

If sexism only exists as "anti-leftism" or "anti-progressiveism", in what sense is it different from those "anti-isms"? If sexism exists as an "anti-woman" experience, then please site an example where sexism has harmed a right-wing, or Republican, candidate.

Willie must have done something to really piss her off last week:

And by the way, we were furious about the past presidential election of a man whose presidency would eventually end in disgrace with his impeachment for obstruction of justice.

One article said she was referring to Nixon but if she was, she is having some real mental issues:

1) Nixon was never impeached. The only presidents to be impeached have been Johnson and Clinton.

2) Hillary (with 2 ls) was on the staff of the Watergate committee that tried and failed to impeach Nixon. Perhaps the reason she was fired was really terminal stupidity. Does she really not know that they failed to impeach? (Yes, they might have impeached had Nixon not resigned. But he did and they didn't)

That stroke she had 5 years ago may still be affecting her.

Or maybe she really did mean to bring Willie's malfeasing into the conversation.

I had not read any of Nixon's books before but a couple months ago I read Ike and Dick about the Eisenhower/Nixon presidency. Pretty good. It lead me to Nixon's book "Leaders" about some of the memorable leaders that he had known and what made them memorable. I recommend it too. I suspect that I may investigate some more of Nixon's books.

Wellesley showcasing Hillary as an exemplar of a graduate of its college breaks my heart. Until women were allowed to attend top universities like Harvard, Princeton, or Yale, the all-female Seven Sisters attracted the best and the brightest women. Wellesley graduates were prepared to compete with men as equals. And they did —in medical schools, law schools, business schools and in Ph.d programs. Hillary's biggest achievements were a result of riding the coattails of her philandering rapist husband. Hillary does not do Wellesley proud IMHO.
