"Because of the impact she should have had severe injuries. She had a tyre mark on her chest."

"But her only injuries were she had no skin on her toe or her hip. The doctors think what saved her from injury was she didn't tense up."

Watch out for Munchhausen by proxy enthuse stories.

This was the fake Drudge headline:
"Mystery of BIONIC GIRL who doesn't eat, sleep -- or feel pain!"
Except for the facts that she eats and sleeps, and is not "bionic" or mysterious, it was accurate.

That should've been "in these" stories. Too bad no preview function to defeat autocorrect.

@Althouse, does a sleep disorder like that explain the output of you and Glenn Reynolds?

The mom responding in the comments is interesting. "She's not going to live past her 20s" someone writes. "Thanks for that," the mom responds. Real people...

I think the headline about her eating and sleeping is better in the article in which it says she doesn't feel fatigue or hunger.

If true she will likely have a horrific but painless death.

Her inability to feel pain means it will be unsafe for her to participate in any sort of sports.

I see the headline still contains outright lies. Perhaps the Daily Express earned its name by going from obfuSTATION to mendaCITY with no stops in between.

Yeah, I know... lame. But I'd like to think there's at least one UK paper I could read with confidence, not that the Express ever had it. The Daily Mail has some good photojournalists on staff, and could keep a person reasonably well-informed as long as one didn't actually read it. The Telegraph has become an EU doormat, and... well, there are no more gentlemen from The Times.

Advantage: No need for anesthesia. You can keep on eye on those surgeons while they operate.
Disadvantage: She can't know when she is sick and needs help - appendicitis, strep throat, brain tumor, etc. would go unrecognized.

I hate the way we are so stuck on stupid on American society. This girl needs a lot of help. She isn't a super hero.

Reminds me of the Althouse theory where any study on women must present the finding as positive towards women.

Imagine if a drug could be developed to turn off temporarily the genes involved and render one insensate to pain, hunger and reduce the need for sleep? Imagine troops who could do this. If it's our guys, great. If it's the oppo then that would be very scary.

I think I've read that a lot of the disfigurement in leprosy came because they didn't feel pain in their hands or where ever the disease manifested itself and so they didn't move their hands away from burns or cuts or bumps. This girl's mother has her daughter in perfect shape and deserves a lot of credit. But soldiers would probably become so cut and bruised and shocked that in a short while they would be useless even if they didn't feel bad. They'd just fall over.

I knew a guy in the Army who had a very high pain tolerance. He developed a stress fracture in one leg during a road march. He finished the march and the rest of basic training. Finally, after a week of infantry training, he had it checked. He came back from sick call with his leg is in a cast. He told me that not feeling pain meant he could get injured easily. He once scalded himself taking a shower because he didn't know the water was hot.

When my granddaughter was a toddler, she was frerless. She'd do anything safe in the knowledge tha someone would catch her. Later, when she learned about gravity and became cautious. The girl in n the story is likely to experience some serious injuries because she won't learn to be careful.
