Oscar nominations about to happen. Watch live here! OSCAR SHOCK: Only white actors nominated!

I would not have noticed, but my younger son IM'd me — at 7:20 a.m., which seemed odd.

ADDED: I took out the live-stream embed, because it's over. You can read the lists of nominees here.

My off-hand observations: Sniper killed. Selma snubbed. Everything looks super male-character-centered. And: Laura Dern!!!

ALSO: The acting nominees are all white people. This, in a year with "Selma."

AND: I have more to say about the race and gender politics here.

I was going to say that Selma was released in 2015, but they did that stupid-ass "limited release last week of 2014 to qualify for the Oscars" trick.

Four out of five lead actor nominations are for portrayals of real people.

More than the race, I'm sick of award shows salivating over historical figures in film.

2004, Jamie Foxx, Ray

2005, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote

2006, Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland

2008, Sean Penn, Milk

2010, Colin Firth, The King's Speech

2012, Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln

2013, Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club

Selma was shit. Period.

So? Maybe the pool of black actors wasn't that good this year.

I don't get it.

Why is this a shock?

I love having to discuss EVERYTHING in terms of race. It just adds the crunch to my salad, you know?

If we go by quota, there should be one black actor nominated per category every two years. And a black winner once every 10 years. Considering the previous nominations and winners it is not statistically significant.

how many Asians get nominated?

Hispanic babes sure. Hispanic Men? They outnumber Black men... why no outrage?

Combine Maybee and B's comments and you're on to something.

Shock! There are filters operating in America other than race.

(Wow. My autocorrect Is really weird. I typed "filters" and it substituted "rioters." Maybe there is no other filter than race,)

Does it seem to anybody else that these various entertainers spend more time running around giving each other awards than actually entertaining anyone?

Interstellar got snubbed for Best Picture. They should have made Cooper gay.

Combine racism with feminism for a film that can't fail at the Oscars:

"Selma and Louise"

White people are bad. They should stop doing things.

So bad that apparently there aren't even any movies about Asians or mestizos to not nominate.

"Glory" was nominated for best original song, so "Selma" wasn't totally shut out.

The nominees are as white as the MSNBC news room, or Obama campaign headquarters. For shame, Hollywood.

Well, there's a movie about a heroic gay man, so they still have a chance to demonstrate their moral superiority to heteronormative patriarchs. Then there's that movie about Stephen Hawking which really blows the lid off white privilege.

Laslo Spatula said...

If Denzel Washington had played Stephen Hawking he'd be a shoo-in for an Oscar.

I am Laslo.

Not to win is a factor, not to be nominated is a slight, or maybe a punch.

If 'everything is awesome!' wins best song my head might explode.

I have an easy solution--have separate but equal Oscars, one for black people and one for whites. Clearly all that matters now is race, right? After all, "race matters" according to our wise Supreme Court justice. Let's just finally go whole hog and judge everyone by the color of their skin, as the content of their character is secondary.

I'll worry about all this when the NBA has quotas for 5'81/2" white men..

That movie William mentioned, "The Imitation Game", is about Alan Turing.

I saw it 2 weeks ago with the wife. We both loved it.

So tell us about what was Oscar worthy in the movie "Selma".

The yellow plastic people from "The Lego Movie" also were snubbed!

Shutting out "The Interview" was a huge snub to Asian actors.

2013, Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club

This was a truly outstanding performance.

The real controversy will come when the first transgendered thespian tries to cross the actor/actress divide. And I don't mean crossing dressing. This will happen in less than 5 years.
