"YouTube's Biggest Draw Plays Games, Earns $4 Million a Year."

"Cussing, Comic Videogame Reviewer PewDiePie Has 27 Million Subscribers."
Felix Kjellberg... A native of Gothenburg, the seemingly modest Swede... simply plays games and allows his audience—mostly teenagers—to peer in on his experience and hear random opinions interspersed with odd behavior. He contorts, screeches, swears, sings and even "twerks" to portray his feelings.
Here's an example:

So the secret to making $4 million a year is: 1. Be a very cute guy. 2. Be childlike and silly. 3. Play in a way that makes the viewer feel she is not alone but is playing with you.

And that's why Felix Kjellberg is a 4-millionaire and you're not.

He almost has a west coast U.S. accent.
Our neighbors across the 49th parallel have a stronger accent than this guy.

How do you live in Sweden, and not have a British flavor to your English.

I wonder if being cute has ever made any money for women?....Nah...can't be possible!

It's the strangest thing, but all three of my boys do this. They load up youtube and they watch this guy play video games. I don't understand it.

Not this guy as in the guy you're highlighting. The guy they watch is called blitzwinger. He doesn't have a potty mouth, so we let our kids watch.

Although sometimes he has guests or friends with potty mouths, then we have to step in.

It's beyond me why kids like to watch someone else playing a game and talking about it the whole time. But my children all love it.

Well, I laughed out loud and thoroughly enjoyed him enjoying the artistry and inventiveness of his charming adversary, the game.

I feel like a wide-eyed Margaret Meade enjoying the anthropology of the now, thanks to you, Althouse.

Gabba gabba.

It used to be common for Scandinavians to have a British accent because most English teachers were trained to teach RP in schools. Now, most younger Scandinavians have more of an American accent than British due the dominance of American culture and travel.

I think the key is to do something dorky that a lot of people do but be very handsome so that people can feel like it's less dorky when they watch you.

So many kids, so many parent's credit cards and Paypal accounts.

When will more adults learn to check their monthly bills more closely?

Yo, from what I can tell, the proposed goal is either to become a multi-millionaire (at least) or, if that notion fails, to settle into today's notion of subsistence living in order to have the time to support the more successful, those who rake in the--to use a quaint phrase--big bucks. Hey.
