"This case definitely falls in the rarest of rare categories and warrants the exemplary punishment of death."

Said the judge, in India.
Earlier, protesters outside the court had demanded that the four men should be hanged.

As they were escorted to the courtroom, the four men shouted to the crowd: "Brothers, save us!"

"You cannot go to a gang rape or an execution unless you have a slight Indian accent ... I'm not joking."

Perhaps the intellectual elite at Yale should leave their ivory tower and travel to India to rediscover the true definition of rape in the real world.

They appeal to the men in the crowd. Somehow "Sisters, please save us!" doesn't seem like it would work for this gang.

Gang rape with sexual mutilation leading to death seems to justify government-sanctioned death. Sorry, Rajeesh, you and your fellow rapist murderers forfeited your right to live.

Assuming one isn't opposed to the death penalty in principle, it's hard to see why it would not be appropriate in this case. If India has a violence-against-women problem, as some say in the news article, that seems to be a reason to support harsh punishment for this kind of crime. Severe punishment may deter even brutes, and if it doesn't it keeps them from doing it again.

I hope this verdict acts as a deterrent to Indian males who think raping women will only get them a slap on the wrist. Indian women have found their voice and I think it may be just the beginning. All that education that Indians seem to respect, has taken Indian women into the modern world, or at least less mired in the past. I guess time will tell.

It should be noted that it was not just "death penalty for gang rape," but death penalty for gang rape, torture and murder. I sincerely hope that India is more efficient and timely than we are at meting out the death penalty to criminals that richly deserve it.

I really hope they arrested the right men. I have my doubts.
