Court: "Although her pornography career has concluded..."

"... the ongoing availability of her pornographic materials on the Internet will continue to impede her from being an effective teacher and respected colleague."

Lawyer: "We were hoping we could show you could overcome your past.... I think she’s representative of a lot of people who may have a past that may not involve anything illegal or anything that hurts anybody."

An interesting incident for a couple of reasons:

1. Happened right in the neighborhood of porn production territory.

2. Oxnard is a naval base town. So, it's a town that knows quite a bit about sins of the flesh.

Don't know what I think about firing the teacher. Teaching contracts generally contain a morals clause, don't they?

I think that reality is a little more complicated and individual than that.

I suggest you watch a documentary entitled After Porn Ends.

Color me a bit surprised that this decision was handed down by a California judge. Based on the facts given in the article, I can't help but feel this was wrongly decided.

As far as I'm concerned, an employee has no obligation to discuss her previous career choices with her current employer, assuming that those choices involved legal behavior. So that takes care of the deceit argument. Attacking her acting in porn films as "below the dignity of the teachers", when it's pretty obvious both the other teachers and the students were consumers of pornography is rank with hypocrisy.

He said she took parts only during an eight-month period from 2005 to 2006 because of financial problems after her boyfriend abandoned her.

Abandoned her? I thought women were independent adults responsible for making their own life choices. Who knew that dating creates a financial commitment that outlasts the relationship?

Just about everybody consumes porn. Most people deny it.

The reason why all the ladies are shaving their nether regions is because porn made it fashionable.

The district claimed the circumstance reduced her effectiveness with the students. Do you doubt this? If not isn't it fairly easy to understand that private behavior would not create the disruption that public behavior would?

From the linked article:

Student claims that the teacher was moonlighting as a porn star were initially dismissed after school officials said they couldn’t find any images of her on the Internet — but they were using the school’s computers, which don’t allow access to porn.

Teachers then showed administrators downloads of Halas’ sex videos from their smartphones.

What hypocrites! They're downloading porn onto their smartphones and then getting all righteous about having one of the performers in their midst. Whited sepulchres, indeed!

Oh, well. I guess for Ms. Halas, there's always Hot For Teacher #25.

If she had gotten a tattoo of Obama on her ass, she could claim political discrimination and the teacher's union would have been behind her 100%. I would advise all porn stars interested in a second career in education to get a tattoo of Obama.

I can't believe the teachers ratted out a fellow teacher like that. Is she union?

As a Christian, I believe in redemption and forgiveness. I hope she has sought forgiveness and moved on with her life, that would be wonderful!

But that porn will be on the internet for decades, and some of her students, if they are post-puberty, will be distracted and consumed by those videos. So I hope she seeks work where her video history will not put her at such a disadvantage.

Accepting reality is good for us. I have lost a lot of weight, and continue to do so, but 60 lbs ago people did not want to work with me on their eating disorders! Duh! As I continue to streamline physically, that population will be more willing to work with me.

No need for attorneys, just acceptance of the way things are.

Think of the hypocrisy of parents who occasionally have sex on thew living room couch and don't let their eighth grade children watch. Oh the hypocrisy!

This "psycho-sexually harmed" bit always perplexes me.

Why does watching other people have sex "psycho-sexually harm" people?

I haven't got a clue why this is assumed.

I assure you, there are few eighth graders who have not viewed all the sex acts you just listed via internet porn.

Its interesting the judge was a woman.
I wonder if there would have been a different reaction to the ruling if the judge had been a man.Not that I think the ruling is wrong, just that it would have had the appearance of a man judging a woman's decisions about her body. Some might perceive it as puritanical and oppressive.

A lot of suicides and ODs in porn, largely because a lot of the players' scarred psyches long before they went into it.

PS I love the line, "school officials said they couldn’t find any images of her on the Internet — but they were using the school’s computers, which don’t allow access to porn".

Better get rid of the "school officials" if they're that stupid.

When I was an 8th grader, I would not have been able to respect a teacher that was a known porn actress. Nor would I have been able to remain disciplined enough to complete the neccessary work, especially in a tough subject such as biology.

What good is a teacher that has no credibility with their students, male or female?

Yeah. The correct one. There is always some sort of coercion involved (with the exception of a few isolated cases of powerful women tring something as a lark--too few to be anything but a statistical blip.) Don't kid yourself. And talk to them after they have done it--with enough time passing for them to say what they really think. I've read and heard nothing but regret.

Eric the Fruit Bat said...

You know, firing this teacher would make even less sense if she did that kind of porn where the MILF walks in on the boyfriend and girlfriend and teaches them how to do it right.

Shouting Thomas said...

Yeah. The correct one.

For you.

No, there is not always some sort of coercion involved.

Anything one does in life produces some regret. I regret that I didn't pursue a professional baseball career, and I could have.

So, the solution for you, since sex seems so explosively coercive and dangerous, is for you to live the way you want to live.

When I was an 8th grader with all those hormones, I'd get horny seeing the crack of dawn. It would've been even more difficult paying attention in class had I seen porn videos of my teacher.

Disingenous, don't you think? Thinking that there is some sort of coercion involved (from actual accounts) for a girl/woman having group sex now applies to all romantic sex between a single man and woman? You've been "debating" with Ritmo too long.

Coercion and diminished capacity (as in drugs or alcohol) in some fashion. Ask someone who has been "filmed" doing these things how they feel about it a month later. Or ten years later. Tiffany Six should sue the industry for age discrimination as well. She had to perform the most extreme acts just to get hired because of her age. I'd like to hear a copy of the audition session and prior conversations--the parts that didn't make the final cuts.

Shouting Thomas said...

You need to live your sex life as you want and cool off.

This case aside, the combination of facial recognition software, social media, and candid photos set loose on the internet is a privacy problem -- assuming one cares about that.

I was horrified some months back when I downloaded a new version of Picasa, Google's pretty good photo organizing tool, and discovered it thrashing the hard disk as it chewed through all my photos attempting to recognize people's faces.

Facebook also uses facial recognition on members' photos unless the feature is turned off.

From what I've read quite a lot of nude amateur photos make it to internet porn sites without permission due to carelessness, meanness or theft.

I'm not saying this is the end of the world, but it is the dawning of new and risky one for those who care about their names being publicly connected to naked photos.

The funny thing is that someone who committed say a DUI in their 20's would still be able to get and hold a teaching job. DUI is a crime and something we try to teach kids never to do. Yet, a teacher who had sex on camera (a perfectly legal activity) is fired because her students may not be able to concentrate?

Um, have you seen the scary number of 8th and 9th graders with kids? They know about sex already.

Will anyone ever be able to put their past behind them? We all have done things we may regret, but we can leave those behind? Why can't this woman?

Now tell us how cool with it you would be if you ever found out that the daughter you told us about had followed in the footsteps of Tiffany Six.

Darrell said...

Did you Google Tiffany Six? Does she look like she is in her twenties? She started as a MILF-- probably not too many years ago. And that speaks more to her judgement. The "mistakes of youth" defense doesn't apply in this case, so why bring it up?
