''I'm not going to pretend that we're even going to contemplate saving you."

''I love you, Simon, but I don't care."

''Megan, with the greatest respect, when you said that you don't care, nor do we. ... This is your swan song. Enjoy it."

ADDED: To help you Idol non-fans have something to talk about, here's Adam Lambert — from Tuesday night — singing "Play That Funky Music":

With greatest respect, I don't care what happens on American Idol anymore.

The performances Tuesday were almost all dreadful, as the contestants all fell into the trap of singing a song they loved. I thought L'il Rounds was particularly bad -- caterwaully and all offkey. Adam was back to his shrieking. Only Kris was anywhere near fabulosity -- I can recall what he sang, as I can recall what Adam yelled. The rest of them? Bland musical wallpaper. Maybe Birthday Year will go better for some of them.

Sometimes it's easier to find a half-gallon container of Ice Cream at the store than it is to find a good song performance on AI.

I still like her but predict she will go nowhere as a singer. She has half the package to be great, but I don't think she has the songwriting skills or the self-sufficiency as an artist to make it in the niche she would excel in.

“I love you Simon but I don’t care”

I thought it was perfectly clear that Althouse was engaged to Meade ;)

Something strange happened to Megan's voice as the competition progressed and not in a good way. Early on she had an interesting groove and musicality but in the past several weeks, her voice has been downright annoying. It was definitely time for her to go.

I keep hearing the claim that Adam Lambert is super-talented but we won’t know for sure until he takes on “Run, Joey, Run” by David Geddes.

And by that I mean both the male and female parts.

Has he got the chops?

Go for it, kid, and make us all proud!

Let's see, Adam was born in 1982, so he has some great songs to choose from for next week:

Eye of the Tiger! Let's Get Physical! Centerfold! Don't you want me! Waiting for a Girl Like you! Eye in the Sky! Every little thing she does is Magic!

Maybe he should do Abba's last "Hit", Under Attack! But he does seem like a Human League type of singer, which means he shouldn't sing their signature song -- to predictable. Hmm.

Adam should sing Dolly Parton's 1982 hit: I will Always Love you. I think he could hit that out of the park.

It looked like he was lip-syncing.

This show mistreats not just the contestants but its audience. All these fake-outs, scares and reprieves. And then there are "saves" when you think someone is eliminated, but they're back! I had to stop - too manipulative.

Ultimately they know who they want, since they have a production stake in whoever will be the winner; they know what is and is not marketable today.

We always DVR the show and then speed-watch it later. Two nights of AI can be distilled down to about a half hour.

It's bad enough that this show exists. I hadn't realized that its "results" are actually reported in the Arts section of the New York Times. I can't decide if that's a nail in the coffin of the Times, the arts, or all of civilization.

I was flipping through channels last night and caught Idol just as Simon and Megan were having that exchange. When she started singing I had to change the channel.

I actually thought this was probably the weakest week this season on American Idol. Most people were bad. Adam gave probably his weakest performance so far (apparently he had two change songs a day before the performance episode). Only Kris and Allison were at their best.

But actually, there was one person who did give a great performance this week on American Idol. And that person is, of course...Lady Gaga!

That should've been "to," not "two."

Written before I listened to Adam's (valiant?) effort: "Play that funky music white boy" is there any other song that so publicly confesses total non-funkitude? Has anyone besides the original artist (AWB IINM) managed to keep a shred of their dignity while performing it? Short answers: No.

Written after listening to Adam: see above.
