This reminds me of a conversation I had last month, though it wasn't as funny. Kinda sad, actually.

Don Knotts was a genius. That serious look he gets at the beginning - a total set-up to let you know Barney doesn't know shit - is a howler, only topped by when he proceeds to muss up his hair. A real star.

If the "Andy Griffith Show" were done today, who could play Barney part as well as Don Knott's?

For that matter, who could play Andy as well as Andy Griffith?

Floyd the Barber?

Howard?

Kirk does it better.

Funny but slight continuity problem with the hair from the one shot edited in with the two shot.

The remake would have to include more diversity.

Sheriff Andy Taylor - Morgan Freeman

Barney - Eddie Griffin

Floyd the Barber - Bobby Lee

Otis the Drunk - Artie Lange

Howard Sprague - Paula Poundstone

Aunt Bee - Whoopi Goldberg

Gomer Pyle - Scott Thompson

Goober - Larry the Cable Guy

Andy went over to Raleigh this past Saturday. He was reciting a poem his wife wrote for the inauguration of the new governor, a Democrat. And she's a woman, too. The governor. Don't that beat all!

No. Andy and Opie endorsed Obama and so did Fonzie.

When will Obama Jump the Shark ?

I agree with Emcee, Don Knotts was a genius. The chemistry between Andy Griffith and Knotts was perfect. When Don left the Andy Griffith show in 1965 it just wasn't the same anymore.

Andy - Denzel Washington

Barney - Dave Chappelle

Floyd - Jamie Foxx

Otis the Drunk - Rick James

Aunt Bee - Garielle Union

Howard - Jaleel White

Gomer - Michael Clark Duncan

Goober - Al Sharpton

Yep, ol' simple country boy multimillionaire beach dwellin' Andy is a communist - who knew? Oh, right, anyone who was paying attention. He is a UNC grad, afterall...

Nah, it was that Howard Sprague who was the shady one.

I'm so glad you posted that clip. I've been dying to find an excuse to link to that video for weeks!

The screen grab is hilarious, and the timing of the nice tribute to Knotts at the end over the silence as Fife struts his bufoonery is just perfect.

Indeed, Don Knotts' incarnation of Barney Fife was genius. As a kid watching the show I remember how he could take you on an emotional roller coaster, all while doing first rate situation comedy. He'd be silly to the point you couldn't take him seriously. Then he'd act so officious, self-important, arrogant and almost mean to the point you could hate him. But soon he'd reveal that all of it was bundled within the sad, insecure, even tragic depths of a human frailty that we all share.

Then back to silly again, all in one 30 minute episode.

Crack, that was an excellent read and a great reminder.

For laugh-out-loudability, that clip is right up there with the one of Althouse eating her cold egg salad sandwich - the second cold egg salad sandwich because her video failed on the first one. Boy, did we get our money's worth! I'll call that my favorite Althouse blogspot moment of the 5 year (so far) magnus opie. I mean, opus.
